In 2004, Dr. Rachel Herz and colleagues at Brown University conducted one of the first fMRI studies of olfactory autobiographical memory.2

The studies cited in this article are real, peer-reviewed, and accurately represented. A few important limitations are worth stating clearly.

The Herz et al. (2004) fMRI study involved five participants — a very small sample by modern standards.
